FEARLESS LEADER SPOTLIGHT: Adrienne Chikahisa Foley, aka Madame President!

Who IS she?!: Hello! I'm originally from Mill Valley, California. The first three years of my career I spent abroad in Tokyo, Japan working as a Technology Recruitment Consultant. After I moved back to the States, I pivoted my career into marketing, working as a Digital Media Planner at an ad agency. This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Dell Technologies in their Global Brand Content & Global Sponsorships teams. At Questrom, I'm in the FT program and am concentrating in both Marketing and Leadership & Org Transformation. I came to business school to finetune my business acumen, but most importantly develop my leadership skills. I aspire to be a people manager for a large marketing department in the future. Additionally, I'm a big advocate for diversity in the workplace, and hope to be a champion for continually promoting women in business. In terms of fun facts, from ages 7-18 I practiced Tae Kwon Do competitively, and am a third degree black belt. Ever since, I have always valued fitness and leveraged it as a way to destress and have fun! My new quarantine hobby is I taught myself how to embroidery, and have gifted six embroidery hoops!

...Ok honestly, what CAN'T she do? Give us more please...

A female business BOSS you admire and why: Hands down my Aunt Trace. As a Finance professional in the Automotive industry, she is typically the only female in the room. She's overcome adversity and actively sought opportunities that would accelerate her career versus holding her back. Generationally, she is unique in that she changed jobs/industries quite a few times. Additionally, she invests time outside of her profession to give back to the community, serving on the boards of countless non-profits, as well as organizing charity work within her current organization. I admire how much she advocates not only for women, but also Asian-Americans in business as they are largely a minority in the C-suite. I appreciate how she is her authentic self both at work and home. This authenticity has allowed her to thrive and become a well-respected professional in her firm.

Book or Podcast you love and why: Podcasts: 1) Armchair Expert - Dax & Monica! Such a hilarious dynamic duo. They interview every character under the sun from celebrities, pyschologists, politicians, entrepreneurers etc. Very provocative, yet intelligent questions asked. I love listening to them on long drives or walks. Also Monica always calls Dax out if he's out of line/inappropriate; 2) Michelle Obama Podcast - do I even need to say why?! Boss; 3) How I Built This - Great for b-school, also a great resource for prepping for interviews. I listened to the Michael Dell one multiple times before interviewing; 4) Hidden Brain by NPR - if I'm in a slump and want to learn something unique/educational, and don't feel like reading I usually listen to this podcast; NPR Upfirst and 5) The Daily for morning news that's quick and creatively formatted. Books: I can add more to this, but I'm reading "Caste" right now and WOW, so relevant to what is happening right now. The author, Isabel Wilkerson's writing is unbelievable. Winner of the pulitzer prize and part of Oprah's Book Club.

Tips on how to network in a pandemic world: Offering options to the person you are reaching out. For example, recommending you do a quick call for just 15-20 minutes and you'll accommodate to their schedule (typically the call will go longer, it's just getting them to commit!). Being very flexible with time zones and people's personal situations (many of these folks are at home with their kids and families!). Spread the net wide and don't limit yourself to a specific industry/function, be super open to talking to a diverse array of professionals.

We love our President! Feel free to reach out to Adrienne and catch her between ruling this women-led-empire and racking up her black belts at https://www.linkedin.com/in/adriennefoley1/ or at acfoley@bu.edu
