Good morning everyone! First year FTMBAs, best of luck on your midterms! This week, the spotlight is on 2nd year FTMBA Courtney Hsu.

Before the MBA, Courtney worked in L.A. at an experiential marketing agency doing events, tradeshows, conferences for six years. She sat on the DE&I committee at her past agency and participated in a mentorship program with underserved communities, experiences which inspired her to pursue a social impact MBA at Questrom.

If you see Courtney around Questrom, odds are that if she is not headed to class, she's headed to a club meeting! She is the Women's MBA Association's (WMBAA) Co-President, Asian Business Club's VP of Communication, Questrom Grad Council's VP of Marketing, Co-Chair of BU on Board, and Sports & Social Club's VP of Vibes & Fun! Some upcoming events to look out for is WMBAA x Marketing Club's Thirsty Thursday on 9/21 and WMBAA x GSAD Networking night on 9/29.

A fun fact about Courtney is that she practiced figure skating up until high school. She participated in the Talent Show last year where she got to show off her stellar skating skills with other classmates.

A few 2nd year SIMBAs are hosting coffee chats this week to create a space for asking questions about careers, classes, and more. Stop by the Questrom Starbucks at the following times to meet SINC officers!

BU Climate Innovation Challenge

This new competition invites all BU students and class of 2023 alums to submit innovative ideas that helps Boston be more climate-resilient. $15,000 in funding will be awarded to the winning ideas. More info available on the challenge webpage.

Graduate Clubs

The Impact Investing club is for those interested in a career in purposeful and impactful finance. Apply to be a board member today!

The Internship Fund for Social Impact (IFSI) is a student-led club that fundraises and provides financial support to empower MBA students pursuing social impact focused internships. Learn more about IFSI and apply to be a 1st year representative!

External Events

Turner MIINT is a program that goes from fall through March in which MBA teams are trained on the impact investing process. The goal for each team is to deal source and recommend investment for a real life social enterprise. Top teams compete at Penn's Wharton Business School and the winning team will secure a $50K investment from Turner MIINT.

On Monday September 25 at 5 PM EST, Professor Greg Stoller will be holding a Zoom info session about MIINT at this link that will be recorded. Applications for MIINT are due October 1 and are open to FTMBAs and PEMBAs. If you have any questions, reach out to Andrew Ericksen at andrewer@bu.edu.

MBA Stock Pitch Challenge

The challenge will be hosted on Cornell University’s campus on November 2-3, 2023. The event challenges teams of finance students from top MBA programs to prepare and present buy/hold/sell recommendations and vigorously defend them. MBA Stock Pitch Application

Women in Investing Conference

The conference is designed primarily for first-year MBA students graduating in 2025 who are interested in investment management, but second years are welcome to apply. The conference will be held in Boston on November 16-17, 2023. MBAWIN Application

Conference Fee Reimbursement

Did you know you can be reimbursed for conference expenses from the Social Impact Program?

Social Impact Reimbursement

Social Impact will reimburse up to $50 of conference registration fees. Email John Temps (jtemps@bu.edu) with proof of purchase (receipt with last 4 digits of your card), an itemized receipt, and a current mailing address for the reimbursement check. If one person paid for multiple registrations, include the names and emails of all attendees for $50 reimbursement per registration. Reimbursements will be processed after the conference is completed and may take up to 3-4 weeks to process.

MBA Center Reimbursement
Students should request approval for conference funding before paying for registration fees and/or travel expenses. Individuals can request a reimbursement of 75% of the total conference registration fee and travel expenses up to $500 for the 2023-2024 academic year. Please note that case competitions, career fairs, and BU-sponsored conferences are ineligible for reimbursement. To start the process, please visit the Conference Funding Request Form.

What to watch to this week

As this editor (Kristine) settled into the rhythm of school over the past two weeks, there was finally time to relax and watch a movie; unfortunately, what she watched was the opposite of relaxing. POISONED: The Dirty Truth About Your Food is a Netflix documentary that came out earlier this year that examines the U.S. food industry and investigates how its systemic fractures lead to outbreaks of foodborne pathogens and deadly consequences. You'll never look at a salad the same again.
